A senior academic from London's Kingston University has praised the New South Wales emergency services' textbook response to the Sydney bush fires but warned the authorities were ultimately at the mercy of the elements. Dr Neil Thomas, an environmental hazards and disaster management specialist, said knowledge routinely shared between emergency services personnel in Australia and the United States would prove crucial in helping firefighters tackle a disaster likely to be the most significant of its type in the past decade.
