New drug candidate found for fungal lung infections




Lung infections caused by breathing in the spores of the fungus Histoplasma capsulatum are on the rise. A microbiologist at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center has discovered an advancement that allows him to identify a new compound that inhibits the growth of Histoplasma cells while they are living inside human cells. This potential new antifungal drug could lead to a new way to fight the pathogen without harming human cells.
