Scary centipede’s genes reveal how life evolved on our planet

Centipedes have been genetically sequenced for the first time by an international team of over 100 scientists. In a new study in the journal PLoS Biology, the researchers reveals how this humble arthropod’s DNA gave them new insight into how life developed on our planet. Study co-author Prof. Ariel Chipman at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem says the data reveal how the creatures transitioned to living on land, and independently evolved different solutions to the same problems shared by all land-dwelling creatures by losing some genes and expanding other gene families not present in insects.
