Researchers from Michigan State University have been awarded a Canine Health Foundation grant to conduct research on the inherited causes of Gastric dilatation-volvulus. Gastric dilatation-volvulus (GDV), or bloat, is one of the leading causes of death in dogs, second only to cancer for some breeds, and the number one killer of Great Danes. Despite its prevalence, the cause of bloat is unknown. A multi-disciplinary team at Michigan State University is investigating the hormones motilin and ghrelin for the cause of the disease—and better treatments.
